On this page, we display Search Engine Optimization and Search Engine Marketing advice, hints and tips, small articles. and sometimes even
quotes or words of wisdom by colleagues in the SEO community. (These will be in addition to our regular articles, EasySEO articles, or blogs). We plan
to update 2 - 3 times per week.
New SEO tips will appear in no particular order but we think there is a good chance you'll find them useful. Don't hesitate to contact us with any questions, comments, or criticism. If you want some questions answered by a live human, we can set up a free consultation session, no strings attached. SEO Trump is here to help with professional services. |
Say you found an article or even just a paragraph on the web that you find so fascinating you want to use it on your own website.
If the article is free, good for you. If it isn't, you could be facing copyright issues, and maybe a warning (or worse) from the article's owner. Sure, this can be remedied by receiving permission to use the copy. Any permission will often be conditional on giving appropriate credits, or placing links to the other site. But you can live with that, so you publish the text.
Beware. Even after copyright issues are cleared, duplicate content issues are not. Google and the other Crawlers dislike and eventually penalize duplicate content. This stems from the times when webmasters would create multiple pages with the same content (of course with different page titles) to inflate the site for SEO purposes. The search engines reacted by developing filters to get rid of such content. This can affect whole pages. Worse, sometimes an entire site can get penalized.
What to do? The only way is to re-write the article. How, and by how much, is the subject of serious discussion. Some of our colleagues recommend to re-write 50%, other SEO experts make do with 30%. We feel it's not the quantity but the quality of the changes. Well-placed synonyms, some added words, inverted sentences, headline changes, and shortened or smartly rearranged copy will go a long way to placate the Search Engines. |
