Has it ever happened to you that you exchanged links with another website, only to discover a few weeks or months later, usually by coincidence, that your link was gone from their page?
You are not alone. It happens to tens of thousands of sites, for all sorts of reasons ranging from innocent mistakes by your exchange partner, right up to them deliberately bouncing your link.
Removing your link without notifying you is very rude. Yet it happens often, for a number of reasons: their Page Rank may have jumped, so they consider your site "inferior"; sometimes they have too many links and want to weed out those they need least. Or maybe they have simply pushed your link to a low PR page, or to one of those silly "Links" pages of little value.
You don't want to stay linked to such guys, do you? Yet, believe it or not, many webmasters don't even notice that some of their links have been "mistreated".
But they ought to notice, if only to ensure their partners are fair. And there can be much more serious scenarios, too. Sometimes partner sites get penalized for bad practices. To be linked to such websites spoils your web reputation and very possibly your PR. Or the other site may have closed down and the search engines will find links to a dead site. This, too, can get you downgraded!
Either way, it's important to keep checking your exchange partners' sites, and their backlinks to you, on a regular basis. In the fast-changing web world out there, you simply need to know whom you are dealing with. Spending some time and effort now is a good investment as it can prevent a lot of trouble in the future.
