That's not so simple. For sure, indiscriminate (as in: mass) submissions are not, repeat not recommended. You'll never know, or in any case never check those hundreds of irrelevant Directories to which some dubious operator will submit your site, "guaranteed" and "manually" of course, for 50 Dollars (if you are lucky). And you could be buried there on page 321, together with a Zero PR, among ill-reputed sites. Not a good idea. PR is about being in good company !
Even an individual submission process can go wrong if not well researched. Our heartfelt recommendation: take your time. Research which link category is good for you. Then carefully check the Directories' reputation, link structure and quality, its PR, but, more importantly, the PR of the pages that will likely host you. Then slowly submit to a few a day.
If you can't find any reasonable looking page that'll host links, forget that directory. You don't want aggravation. On the other hand if you like the site a lot, have checked it out for quality and are confident you'll benefit from being listed there, don't be shy and ask their webmaster where exactly your link will be placed. You are entitled to know.
The time you'll lose on quantity will be more than made up by getting quality.
